The Law, the Commandments and the Ordinances are all tied together and reflect God’s unobtainable standard.

The “righteous in Christ” are not under the Mosaic Law.

God’s nature is Holiness.

Man’s nature is sinfulness.

The Law shows man’s sinfulness = Romans 7:8-13

The Law shows God’s righteousness = Romans 3:21

There were 613 Laws and not one of them was ever given to a Gentile.

Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words
W.E. Vine Page 314 “LAW” ... while the Mosaic Law is actually divisible into the ceremonial and the moral, no such distinction is made or even assumed in Scripture.

2 Kings 17:13
Yet the LORD warned Israel and Judah, through all His prophets and every seer, saying, “Turn from your evil ways and keep My commandments, My statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers...

1 Chronicles 16:40
To offer burnt offerings to the LORD on the altar of burnt offering continually morning and evening, even according to all that is written in the law of the LORD, which He commanded Israel.

You see the Law is a package deal.
You are either under all of them, or you are under none of them.

Hebrews 9:19-20
For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20) saying, “this is the blood of the covenant which God commanded you.”

Galatians 3:10
For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, “cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law, to perform them.”

The Law is a covenant deal.

Hebrews 8:6-7
But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises. 7) For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion sought for a second.

Hebrews 9:15
And for this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, in order that since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

Hebrews 8:13
When He said, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.

Colossians 2:14-17
Having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us and which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15). When He disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him. 16). Therefore let no one act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day 17). things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ.

Two covenants are seen in Galatians 4:21-31

Those under Grace.... Those under Law
Free woman-vs.22 .............................. Bond woman-vs.22
Promise-vs.23 ....................................... Flesh-vs.23
Jerusalem above “free”-vs.26........ Mount Sinai “slaves”-vs.24
Isaac-vs.28 ............................................... Ishmael-vs.30
Spirit-vs.29 .............................................. Flesh-vs.29
Heir-vs.30 ................................................ Not Heir-vs.30

Galatians 4:30
Cast out the bondwoman and her son; for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the free woman.

This is one of the most devastating parts of the Bible, when we realize what it is saying. It describes people that think that they are Christians. They carry Bibles and are faithful Church attendees, but follow a system of merit. The bondwoman follows the system of the Mosaic Law or works to secure their right standing before God.

(Cast out the bondwoman)

The followers of the bondwoman are not saved.

The Law of Commandments has been abolished.

Ephesians 2:15
Having abolished in His flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in Himself of twain one new man, so making peace...

STRONGS... New Testament Greek Words.

Ephesians 2:15
even the law <3551> of commandments <1785>
This is an extremely important point since some want to divide the Law and say that Ephesians 2:15 is only talking about a portion of the Law, but not all the Law.

The same Greek word for Law is
used in Ephesians 2:15 and Matthew 5:18.
STRONGS
law <3551>

Matthew 5:18
For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass away from the Law, until all is accomplished.

So we can see that they are talking about the same Law meaning all the Law.
___________________________________

The same Greek word for “commandments” is used in Ephesians 2:15 and Luke 18:20

Luke 18:20
You know the commandments, Do not commit adultery,
do not murder, do not steal, do not bear false witness,
honor your father and mother.

STRONGS
commandments <1785>,

Since the same Greek words are used in Ephesians 2:15, Matthew 5:18 and Luke 18:20, there can be no misunderstanding to what “Law and commandments” have been abolished... all of them.
______________________________________

We are under a new system that originates with the promise made to Abraham 430 years before Moses and the Law.

Romans 13:10
Love does no wrong to a neighbor; love therefore is the fulfillment of the law.

Matthew. 5:17-18
Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill. 18) For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass away from the Law, “until” all is accomplished.

The above verse is often misread, therefore, misunderstood. The verse is saying that all the Law will be in effect until He accomplishes His purpose, and His purpose is to fulfill the Law, while establishing a new covenant.

It is not saying that heaven and earth will pass away before the Law passes away, but that heaven and earth will not pass away until all is accomplished.

John 19:28 and 30
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, I am “thirsty.” 30)When Jesus therefore had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowed His head, and gave up His Spirit.

Galatians 3:17 and 19 What I am saying is this: the Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise. 19) Why the Law then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator, until the seed should come to whom the promise had been made.

Peter makes the new deal clear.

1 Peter 1:23
Having been begotten again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible,

Jesus is the incorruptible seed, which is the fulfillment of the Law.

Galatians 3:12
However, the Law is not of faith; on the contrary, “he who practices them shall live by them.”

We have the incorruptible seed, Christ, living in us and is a part of us, never to be separated from us. John 5:24 ... 1 John 5:13

Jesus lived under the Laws and Commandments of the Old Covenant. It is important to realize this fact in rightly dividing His Words. Jesus taught the disciples how unobtainable it was to gain God’s favor by human efforts. That’s why in Matthew 19:25, His disciples said, “Then who can be saved?” Answer... As the result of the promise or “the new covenant,” the incorruptible seed all can be saved by God’s grace through faith in Christ. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

The Jews hated the Gentiles !

The Gentiles hated the Jews !

God wanted them to be one in Christ!

Rather than placing the Gentiles under the Mosaic Law, God abolished it and placed them both under his Royal Law of Love. Ephesians 2:15

James 2:8

If ye fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well...

Misunderstandings occur through not making clear distinctions between the Old Testament Law and the New Testament commandments of Jesus, the law of love.

Matthew 22:36-39
Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law? 37) And He said to him, you shall love the lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38) This is the greatest and foremost commandment. 39) And a second is like it, you shall love your neighbor as yourself.

John 14:15
If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

John 14:21
He who has My commandments, and keeps them, he it is who loves Me;...

John 15:10
If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments, and abide in His love.

NOTE: We see that Jesus makes a clear distinction between His commandments, that we are to follow and His Father’s commandments, which Jesus kept.

John 15:12
This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.

In the books of 1 and 2 John, the commandments spoken of are Jesus’ commandments, given in John 15:12 and 1 John 3:23, not the Mt. Sinai commandments.

John 15:12
This is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you.

1 John 3:23
And this is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us.

1 John 4:21
And this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God should love his brother also.

2 John 1:9
Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ,

Those that abide in the “teaching of Moses” are walking in bondage of Law. One test that can affirm this is if the person is under a heavy burden over their own personal righteousness. Jesus’ burden is easy and light. Therefore, we can conclude that Scriptures have been fulfilled and all has been accomplished, and it is finished and the Law and the commandments have been abolished. Ephesians 2:15

We who are in Christ are under a new Law written in our hearts, the commandments of Love.

1 John 3:22
And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight.

We should motivate people to enter into the freeness of the Spirit, rather than to be slaves to the obsolete covenant.

It is wrong to say that the Christian is obligated to keep the Law of Moses including ceremonial, moral, Torah ordinances, laws of holiness, Levitical ritual’s, laws of punishments, etc.

2 Corinthians 3:3-6-15-16-17
Being manifested that you are a letter of Christ, cared for by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of human hearts. 6) who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter, but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. 15) But to this day when ever Moses is read, a veil lies over their heart; 16) But whenever a man turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17) Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

Misunderstandings occur through not making clear distinctions between the definitions of New Testament Greek words.

1 John 3:4
Every one who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is Lawlessness. NASV

1 John 3:4
Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the Law; for sin is the transgression of the Law. KJV

Many people think the word “Law” in the KJV
1 John 3:4 is a reference to the Mt. Sinai Commandments.

(Which justifies them by placing themselves and others, under the Law of Moses.)

The problem with this view is the Greek word used for Law is Strong’s #458 .

Strong’s Greek word #458 is translated 15 times in the New Testament. Out of the 15 times, it’s translated 12 different times as iniquity, two times as law, and one time as unrighteousness.

If they had been consistent in the translation, 1 John 3:4 would have been translated iniquity.

EXPOSITORY DICTIONARY OF NEW TESTAMENT WORDS
W.E.VINE page #260… INIQUITY
1. ANOMIA (), lit., lawlessness (a, negative, nomos, law), is used in a way which indicates the meaning as being lawlessness or wickedness. Its usual rendering in the N.T. is “iniquity”, which lit. means unrighteousness.
So we can see the NASV, of 1 John 3:4 is most correct.

1 John 3:4
Every one who practices sin also practices Lawlessness; and sin is Lawlessness. NASV

My Suggestion for translation...
1 John 3:4
Every one who practices sin also practices iniquity; and sin is iniquity.

The new system is far better than the old system.

Galatians 3:10
For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written “cursed is every one who does not abide by all things written in the book of the Law, to perform them.”

(Since no one has ever done this except Jesus, it testifies to our need for a Savior.)

John 7:19
Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law?”...

James 2:10
For whoever keeps the whole Law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.”

JESUS SAID:
Matthew 19:18-21 He said to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “you shall not commit murder; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; 19) honor your father and mother; and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 20) The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept; what am I still lacking?” 21) Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come follow Me.”

“If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give them to the poor.” I guess this separates the talkers from the walkers.

Matthew 5:20 For I say unto you, that except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:27-28
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28) But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Matthew 5:38-39 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: 39) But I say unto you, that ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

Matthew 5:43-44
Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love Thy neighbor, and hate thine enemies. 44) But I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you...

Matthew 5:48
Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

The Law reflects God’s unobtainable standard that should point all to their personal need for the perfect Savior. The Savior that becomes our holiness, righteousness, sanctification and perfection: the Lord Jesus Christ.

Galatians 2:21 I do not nullify the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly.

Galatians 3:13
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law...

The Law was given to the Jews never to Gentiles!

Romans 2:14 For when Gentiles who do not have the Law...

Galatians 3:14 In order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Acts 15:5 and 10
But certain ones of the sect of the Pharisees who had believed, stood up saying, It is necessary to circumcise them, and to direct them to observe the Law of Moses. 10) Now therefore why do you put God to the test by placing upon the neck of the disciples a yoke which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?

There are moral principles that are in accord with the nature of God.

The moral principles existed before the Old Covenant 613 Laws.

Romans 1:19
Because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.

Romans 1: 20
For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so they are without excuse.

Romans 2:14-15
For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves, 15) in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness, and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them.”

Galatians 6:2
Bear one another’s burdens, and thus fulfill the law of Christ.

We, as Christians, are not bound to the external Law written in stone and ink, but the internal laws, written by the Spirit on our hearts. Just because they happen to be the same in some cases does not give us the right to lead people back into the old covenant, which has been done away with by Christ.

Galatians 5:14
For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement,
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Romans 13:8
Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the Law.

Romans 13:10
Love does no wrong to a neighbor; love therefore is the fulfillment of the Law.

The Bible makes it clear the Law does not apply to the Christian!

Romans 6:28
For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.

Romans 6:14
For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under Law, but under grace.

Romans 10:4
For Christ is the end of the Law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

1 Timothy 1:9
Realizing the fact that the Law is not made for a righteous man,...

1 Corinthians 1:30
But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption,

The Christian is righteous in Christ and not under the 613 Laws.

I prefer not to build a foundation within a man based on the old covenant, but rather to build a foundation upon God’s holy nature and the New Covenant.

Philippians 3:9
And be found in Him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the Law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith...
