Romans 1:14

It is a declaration of an event.

We preach to warn men of the terror of the Lord.

2 Corinthians 5:11
Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

And do not fear those who kill the body, but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

What kind of a person, would know hell was going
to be horrible, and not alert his fellow man?
Not warning and alerting ones neighbor
of the horrors of hell certainly would not

Jesus said:

Romans 10:13-15
For “whoever will call upon the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14) How then shall they call upon Him whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him whom they have not heard? The preacher’s task is to speak as a personal witness to God’s revelation, interpreting it, explaining it, and applying it to the needs of the people.
“Preaching is the communication of truth through personality.”
They pleaded, warned, rebuked, encouraged; they spoke of judgment; they inspired with glowing promises of the glory to come.
Jesus preached in various locations and to various sized audiences. Sometimes he spoke to small groups and at other times to vast crowds.
The preaching of Jesus was marked by authority and by quiet confidence in God, in Himself, and in His mission and message.

QUESTION:
How do we know which preachers are from God?
ANSWER:
(1) He is either preaching the truth or he is not. Key: Does he know the Bible well enough to defend what he’s preaching?

(2) His heart is either right or it is wrong. Key: It is almost impossible to know his heart on just one encounter. Invest some of your time in getting to know him before you pass judgment.

(3) His delivery is either right or wrong. Key: The Bible is silent on delivery style.

* The Old Testament preachers had a style and they were killed for it.
* The New Testament preachers had a style and they were killed for it.
* Today, many preachers have a style and are praised and
commended for it.

Something is wrong!

Luke 6:26
Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for in the same way their fathers used to treat the false prophets.

Some Christians erroneously believe that the only job of the preacher is to win the lost. Certainly, the winning of the lost should be the centermost concern of all preachers.
Yet, it should be understood that many people are not ready to be won. They are only ready to be warned, reproved, exhorted or rebuked. The preacher’s job is, therefore, to be ready at anytime for whatever the circumstances merit.

When I say to the wicked, O wicked man, you shall surely die, and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require from your hand.

Acts 18:6

How important is it that you warn the lost?
How important is it that you compel the lost to trust Jesus?

When I think of the word preacher or preaching, I do not think of a pastor or teacher or some showmen in a church. I think of someone who is out where the people are speaking boldly. He, therefore, provokes thinking just like Jesus did.

Preaching is the opportunity for us to exhale what we have inhaled. Jesus publicly preached the Gospel out in the open air, publicly. Jesus’ message changed the world. Moreover, His message was not always received by the people of the World, not even His own disciples who
at one point even left Him.

Jesus said:
John 7:7
The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil.

Moses preached, Elijah preached, Isaiah preached, Jeremiah preached, John the Baptist preached, Peter preached, Paul preached, Stephen preached, James preached, just to name a few.
They preached in the wilderness, in cities, publicly in villages, at the beaches, in the streets, and basically everywhere.
Jesus did not use tact; He called it as He saw it. He publicly exposed the religious leaders of His day. He did this to the Pharisees, Scribes, Sadducees, and Herodians. These were the liberals and traditionalists
at that time.

Here is a list of some of the names that people are called in the New Testament. Some of these were spoken of religious leaders; some were spoken of ordinary folks.

Jesus called them -- “dogs” or “swine.”
Matthew 7:7
Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

Jesus called them -- “vipers.”
Matthew 3:7
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Jesus called them -- “hypocrites.”
Matthew 6:2
When therefore you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.

Jesus called them -- “children of the devil.”
John 8:44
You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature; for he is a liar, and the father of lies.

Jesus called them -- “perverted.”
Matthew 17:17
And Jesus answered and said, “O unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him here to Me.”

Jesus called them -- “fools.”
Matthew 23:17
You fools and blind men; which is more important, the gold, or the temple that sanctified the gold?

Paul called them -- “wicked-evil.”
1 Corinthians 5:13
But those who are outside, God judges. Remove the wicked man from among yourselves.

2 Thessalonians 3:2
and that we may be delivered from perverse and evil men; for not all have faith.

Paul called them -- “stiff necked.”
Acts 7:51
You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did.

Again, the purpose for this type of approach is for the sinner’s benefit. The goal of the preacher is to please God with his message, rather than to please man.
Galatians 1:10
For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ.

The preachers in the New Testament spoke and wrote on many topics. They did not just preach the Gospel. They argued and debated and got the attention of the people. Authority was in their speech. As a result, their words were not timid. In addition, they used the issues of the day as doors to the Gospel conveying the true character of God toward sin, judgment, and hell.

In Paul’s ministry, we find the following topics discussed:
· Philosophy
Acts 17:18
And also some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were conversing with him. And some were saying, “What would this idle babbler wish to say?” Others, “He seems to be a proclaimer of strange deities,” — because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection.

· Homosexuality
Romans 1:26-27
For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27) and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.

· Taxation
Romans 13:7
Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.

· Other religions
Acts 17:22-24
And Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I observe that you are very religious in all respects. 23) For while I was passing through and examining the objects of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription, ‘To An Unknown God.’ What therefore you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you. 24) The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands...”

What did Jesus say would happen when the Gospel is preached?
He said that His preachers would be:

Persecuted and Insulted
Matthew 5:10-12
Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11) Blessed are you when men cast insults at you, and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, on account of Me. 12) Rejoice, and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

What Jesus said was going to happen to the New Testament preachers was precisely what had already happened to the Old Testament preachers!

2 Chronicles 36:16
But they continually mocked the messengers of God, despised His words and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against His people, until there was no remedy.

Luke 6:26
Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for in the same way their fathers used to treat the false prophets.

Publicly speaking out on the sins of the day is what every Biblical preacher should be doing. After all, the best of the best did it.

Matthew 11:11
Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

Matthew 14:3-4
For when Herod had John arrested, he bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. 4) For John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”

Matthew 14:8
And having been prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.’”

Matthew 6:19-22
Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20) But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; 21) for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

One question people have is: Where is your fruit?
Our response is that it’s God’s business.

We testify to millions each year through preaching, testifying, personal encounters, signs, tee-shirts, tracts and videos. Also we share in what our disciples are doing.

1 Corinthians 3:6
I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth. So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth.

God is the One who calls men unto salvation. He does not often just use one person. We simply do the part for which God has called us to do.

It is not absolutely necessary to follow up on someone we’ve ministered to in the streets. The idea of becoming personally involved with those that are saved is certainly Biblical. Therefore, the goal of all saints should be to build disciples.

But this idea of “don’t witness if you can’t follow up” is a devilish lie that has been placed in the minds of the saints and encouraged by many pastors and church leaders. It flies in complete opposition to the
Scriptures.

John 4:36–38
Already he who reaps is receiving wages, and is gathering fruit for life eternal; that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. 37) “For in this case the saying is true, ‘one sows, and another reaps.’ 38) I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.

We see in these verses two groups: reapers and sowers. They are co-workers for the kingdom of God who share in their rewards. But please do not confuse sowers with disciple makers (those who follow up). The sowing comes before the reaping and the disciple making comes after the reaping. Prior to the reaping, oftentimes, the ones in whom the seed has been sown do not want follow-up. We, the preachers, are recurrently sowing, carrying forth the witness of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and offering the Holy Spirit who works though us to accomplish His purpose.

John 16:7–8
But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper shall not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8) And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment.

That is what open-air preachers preach about -- sin. All are sinners and need a Savior, and righteousness by faith. We all need to turn to Jesus from our sins and trust Jesus’ judgment. Heaven or hell, the choice is yours -- eternity in a love relationship with God or eternal separation from God in hell.

Could it be that for the most part the only supporter and encourager of the open-air preachers is the Holy Spirit?
It would seem that something causes open-air preachers to sacrifice so much to look like nuts to everyone. They come from all sorts of differing theological backgrounds and walks of life with one common thread between them: to preach about sin, righteousness and judgment.

Paul makes it clear that the reaping of what is sown is a result of hearing by the Word of God. In other words, we preach, they hear. So by going out and boldly preaching, being a witness with the Word is a means by which faith is established. Even with Isaiah’s preaching, they did not all believe. Noah, himself a preacher, had little fruit. Now in the case of the Ethiopian eunuch, he believed, was baptized and then the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away. Where was the follow-up or discipleship program?

Acts 8:39–40
And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; and the eunuch saw him no more, but went on his way rejoicing. 40) But Philip found himself at Azotus; and as he passed through he kept preaching the Gospel to all the cities, until he came to Caesarea.

The bottom line is very clear, the prophets did not follow up on all the people to whom they preached. John the Baptist did not follow up on all the people to whom he preached. Jesus did not follow up on all the people to whom He preached. The apostles did not follow up on all the people to whom they preached. And we don’t follow up on all the people to whom we preach.

A clear dissimilarity needs to be acknowledged between following up on the unsaved to whom we preach and following up on the people that are saved. To think we need to follow up with all the unsaved to whom we preach is ridiculous. Incontrovertibly there is a place for that on the job with neighbors and general life encounters.

Unpretentiously, to follow up with people who are saved is certainly a wise course, but sometimes that is not possible because of location and travel. That’s why we need to trust Jesus to get the job done with or without us. Clearly, we must not neglect our responsibility in the process.

The whole idea that we should not witness to those with whom we cannot follow up on is a frontal attack against the Holy Spirit. The presumption, which people make, is that before, as well as after a person is saved, we need a man-made system to lead them into truth. I am not suggesting that this is not a good idea. All I am saying is that it is not the only idea or the only way when the Holy Spirit is involved. In the Holy Spirit’s timing, He will do His work in individual hearts that are willing to yield to Him. The preacher has little or no control over such things.

I have chosen to identify myself with who I really am, based on the Word of God, not the worldly reality of life’s circumstances or feelings.

The Bible says the following:
I am a member of a chosen race (1 Peter 2:9). My body is now a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). I have been washed clean by Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 6:11). I have become a saint “a holy one” (1 Corinthians 1:2). I have been glorified (Romans 8:30). Nothing can separate me from the love of God (Romans 8:35–39). My citizenship is transferred to heaven (Philippians 3:20). My body will come back from the dead and be renewed (1 Thessalonians 4:13– 18; 1 Corinthians 15:42–58). I have eternal life (1 John 5:13; John 3:36, 5:24). I now am a personal ambassador for the Lord Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20).

So when I step out into the world to represent the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, I step out in power and authority, as a result of believing what God has said about me.
1 Peter 4:11
Whoever speaks, let him speak, as it were, the utterances of God; whoever serves, let him do so as by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

In the New Testament Jesus said:
Matthew 6:33
But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you.

But seek first your education? . . . NO.
But seek first your hobbies?. . . NO.
But seek first your family? . . . NO.
But seek first your job?. . . NO.
But seek first money? . . . NO.
But seek first sports? . . . NO.
But seek first love? . . . NO.

According to The International Standard Bible, Encyclopedia, there are two different kinds of ministry . . . It can be traced in the Epp. of St. Paul and in other parts of the NT. It is seen in the Didache, in the Pastor of Hermas, in the Epp. of Barnabas, in the apology of Justin Martyr, in the writings of Irenaeus and elsewhere. (For a full list of authorities, cf Harnack, Texte u. Untersuchungen, 11, ii, 111ff.)

The one ministry differs from the other in function, and the distinction depends on a conception to be afterward examined — that of “gifts.” The common name, in apostolic and sub-apostolic literature, for the members of the one kind of ministry is “those who speak the Word of God” (laluntes ton logon tou Theou). Modern writers have called it the charismatic, but perhaps the better term is the prophetic ministry; while to the other class belong all the names which are given to denote office-bearers in the local churches. The two existed side by side. The great practical distinction between them was that the members of the former were in no sense office-bearers in any one Christian community; they were not elected or appointed to any office; they were not set apart for duties by any ecclesiastical ceremony.
The “Word” came to them and they were compelled by inward compulsion to speak the message given them to deliver. Some were wanderers; others confined themselves to their own community. They were responsible to no ecclesiastical authority. Churches were encouraged to test them and their message; for the “gift” of discerning whether a so-called prophet spoke a truly divine message was always presupposed to be within the local church. But once accepted they took a higher place than the office bearers, they presided at the Lord’s Supper, and their judgment in cases of discipline could overbear ordinary ecclesiastical rules.

The following notice is what I place on the backside of an ID card that I use when police officers ask me for identification:
Notice to Law Enforcement Personnel, the minister identified on the face of this card is an open-air preacher of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and has the right to pass out literature, preach, and display signs in your public areas (Coates v. Cincinnati 402 U.S. 611 and Edwards v. S. Carolina, 372 U.S.229/ Furr v. Town of Swansea, F.Supp.1543). This applies to high schools and grade schools as well as colleges and municipalities. The minister has the right to stand and exercise his religion in the preaching of the Gospel upon all “quintessential” public forums (Frisby v. Schultz, 487 U.S. 474; U.S. v. Grace, 461 U.S. 171, 176). His preaching the Word of God may offend some people, but this is not legal ground to prohibit his preaching (Simon & Shuster v. New York State Crime Victims Bd, 502 U.S. 105/ N.Y. Times v. Sullivan, 376 U.S. 254). He has the right to be loud enough to be heard (Saia v. New York, 334 U.S. 1943) and to be protected by law enforcement if the crowd is offended by what he is preaching (Hedges v. W.C.U.S.D. No. 118, et al. 9F.3d 1295). If your school, city attorney, or officials wish to talk to me, please extend my cooperation, but do not stop this person from speaking. And do not play games with “prior permits,” etc., or we will sue anyone involved. Section 1983 suits will subject you to damages and our attorney fees. See Title 43 Sect. 1983 of the United States Code. This is a FEDERAL CASE, and allows us to sue individuals, like policemen and guards, personally.

Numerous times I’ve had people approach me saying things like, “Jesus never carried a sign. I thought we were all supposed to be like Jesus.” I’ve responded by saying, “Yes, we are all supposed to try to be like Jesus and when I get to the point of being able to walk on water, raise people from the dead and feed 5,000 people with a few loaves of bread and a couple of fish, I will get rid of my signs and start being more like Jesus. But until then I am going to keep on doing what I do, lifting up the name of Jesus publicly to the people of the world, attempting to be a witness, just like Jesus asked me to do.”

Oftentimes, I am approached by people who identify themselves as being Christians. They take great care in attempting to convince me that I am having no effect on anyone; and if anything, I am giving Christianity a bad name. I recently had a chance to interact with a nice lady who was pointing out to me that I was being ineffectual. After a pause I told her, “The problem is that you don’t understand; I know something you don’t know.”

Puzzled, she asked, “Now just what could that be?”

I told her, “I see the whole movie, just like God does, and all you see is just one small frame.” I continued,“You are like a person walking by a lake who sees a guy sitting out in his boat for hours trying to catch a fish and as you walk by you think to yourself that he is wasting his time; he is not going to catch anything. Yet you are not there to see when he gets his first bite and how he carefully fights the fish, attempting to get it in the boat. You are not there to see the peoples faces change from smug mocking in appearance to serious and sober consideration of my words. You are not there to see the conviction, to hear their pain or to see their tears. You are not there to see the light of the Word penetrating their hearts or to see the new life in their eyes. You are not there to see the Holy Spirit work in the hearts of the ones who have lived in darkness. You are not there to hear the words, “Thank You!”
