Obviously Jesus described Hell as flames of fire and so should we, but consider this.

John 1:29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”

What I will be suggesting is the possibility that just as Jesus was not a four-legged lamb, eternal hell fire is not literal flames of fire as we know them.

Revelation 20:15
And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the Lake of Fire.

For the purpose of this section, when I speak of Hell unless otherwise specified, I am speaking of the Lake of Fire referred to in Revelation 20:15.

Many people do not like the concept of Hell; they take a number of different approaches to make the concept ineffectual, for example:

1. Ignoring it.
2. Pouring water on Hell, making it not so bad.
3. Limiting Hell to a few.
4. Doing away with the eternal effect, advocating all people will
eventually be saved.
5. Eliminating Hell altogether.

They attempt to make God a “Good God” and not a “Bad God,” as they perceive eternal Hell would dictate.

In my attempt to offer an optional view to consider, there are some constants that have to be taken into consideration.

1. God is Good, Holy, Just, and Righteous.
2. Hell is Eternal.
3. People deserve to go there.
4. Hell is really, really bad.

Now let me point out a few concerns many have. Mankind is born into this world and usually lives between one to eighty-five years of age. At the end of life without Jesus Christ as one’s personal Savior, regardless of whether it is because of what man does or as a result of the Adamic nature or a combination of both, man will die and go to Hell.

Many believe Hell is where man is tortured with fire for all eternity. Hence, the person is eternally tortured by God because of the few years lived on earth.

They are tortured with literal flames of fire, provided by God as
a means of punishment, day after day forever and ever.

Some suggest that, although sin is very bad, that’s a bit of an overkill of punishment. They wonder how a Loving, Holy, Righteous, God could do such a thing. It even gets more intense when factoring in how many people go to Hell in relationship to those that go to Heaven.

Revelation 20:12
And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds.

Revelation 20:15
And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Matthew 7:13-14
Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide, and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter by it. 14) For the gate is small, and the way is narrow that leads to life, and few are those who find it.

We can easily see that most people end up in eternal Hell.
It is a very bad place to be.

Matthew 10:28
And do not fear those who kill the body, but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Matthew 25:46
And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

Mark 9:43
And if your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life crippled, than having your two hands, to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire,

So the question is, how can Hell be bad and God be good?
Who is the cause of the torturous burning flames of fire?

Consider a twenty-seven year old man that rapes a twelve-year-old girl and never gets caught. At age forty-two, he became born again. He then goes to Bible school and later becomes a missionary to Africa for the next twenty-five years. He understands the doctrine of grace, the teachings of forgiveness and the power of the blood to cover all sin. He believes in 1 John 1:9 and has personally applied it to his life and former sins.

The question is at age sixty-seven, forty years after the rape, how does this man feel about his sin of raping the twelve-year-old girl? Has he forgotten about it?

No, he has not forgotten about it. Even though it was before he was saved, it’s still a flame of fire that burns away at his soul.

He will never be free from the memory of that sin till the day he dies.
Only when he gets to heaven will he experience total freedom from his sins and the guilt that sin brings to our soul.

1 Corinthians 15:42-44
So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown a perishable body, it is raised an imperishable body; 43) it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; 44) it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.

In Heaven, all sins will be forgotten and remembered no more.

Hebrews 8:12 For I will be merciful to their iniquities, and I will
remember their sins no more. Isaiah 65:17

God won’t remember our sins and neither will we. The clear implication is that unless sins are forgiven here on earth, they will always be remembered by God and never forgotten. Hence, everlasting punishment is a just expression of God’s perfect righteousness!

What I am suggesting is that in Hell all sins will be remembered.

Matthew 8:12-13
But the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out into the outer darkness; in that place there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The weeping may be as a result of total awareness of their situation. Thus, they will have a full knowledge of the significance of their rejection of the Lord Jesus Christ and their life of rebellion.

This could be the eternal flames of fire burning within a persons soul. The torment is not like a blowtorch that God is using against a person but rather one that is caused by the vivid memories and knowledge within a person testifying of their loss burning forever.

Once all is known and the reality of life becomes apparent to all, none will have an excuse for their rejecting of God’s salvation.

At the judgment, unrighteous people lacking the Holy Spirit will fully know and understand the many opportunities they have had through creation, conscience and the works of God and God will tally those things in their presence. Accordingly, they will be left with only the amazement of their pride, ignorance and unwillingness to respond positively to the One and Only Lord God. Surely that will result in eternal misery.

Mankind’s awareness after death will be so in tune with eternal truth. And the new realities of their lost state and their eternally separated from God will cause them to confess that Jesus was right and is the Only Lord God. Consequently, they will admit that they were horribly wrong.

Philippians 2:9-11
Therefore also God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10) that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those who are in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth, 11) and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Since all human life will live forever, all either live with God in a loving relationship or eternally separated from God. What is life other than one’s relationship to one’s self, others, God and creation?

So then in Heaven man has a new self, new relationships, new experiences, new creation and a new relationship with God.

In Hell, man has no loving relationship with God or anyone else and is in darkness. A person in hell will have full knowledge of how easy it would have been to get to heaven and how he personally rejected salvation to believe in lies and deceptions about God by God’s enemy Satan.

Imagine if those in Hell have the ability to know of God’s glory while living in darkness. Knowing of what the Saints are experiencing walking in the light of the Word would cause them great pain and anguish. Fully realizing the condition of their depraved hearts, with no way of changing anything, could be a bit depressing.

Luke 13:24-28
Strive to enter by the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25) Once the head of the house gets up and shuts the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door, saying, “Lord, open up to us” then He will answer and say to you, I do not know where you are from. 26) Then you will begin to say, “We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets;” 27) and He will say, “I tell you, I do not know where you are from; depart from Me, all you evildoers. 28) There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth there when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being cast out.”

There has to be a Hell since everyone lives forever and God does not force people against their wills to have a loving relationship with Him. Heaven is a holy place where no sin can exist. There has to be a place for the prideful, rebellious, self-willed, stiff-necked sinners.

Hebrews 9:27
And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment...
________________________________________

Allow me to make a wild leap. Since no one knows for sure what Hell is really going to be like, I will suggest a few options that will reinforce the fact that Hell is bad, but God is good.

Revelation 21:2
And I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,…

Revelation 21:24-27
And the nations shall walk by its light, and the kings of the earth shall bring their glory into it. 25) And in the daytime (for there shall be no night there) its gates shall never be closed; 26) and they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it; 27) and nothing unclean and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

It could appear that since the gates are always open and nothing unclean can come in, that the possibility of some desiring to come in and can’t, would justify the point being made. Note: Luke 13:24-28

How many have said, when a loved one dies, that they will see them again someday?

How many saved people have known an unsaved person that they have loved only to have that unsaved person die unsaved?

In the New Jerusalem, if you could walk out of the gate and go see an unsaved loved one, would you? It would be like a father or mother that went to visit a son or daughter in prison. When they meet the son or daughter in prison, the son or daughter is happy to see their parents. When the parents leave the son or daughter, they returns to their cell not so happy.

What if the same kind of a concept were possible in the future? The ones in Hell having full knowledge of why they are in darkness and from time to time experience the saints coming and going. That would be Hell. Flames of fire would than be burning within a person that is left only with memories of their rebellion and with a constant knowledge of the holy saints and the Holy God, whom they rejected.

Romans 12:20-21
But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head.”

II Thessalonians 1:9
And these will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,

It seems to indicate that people in Hell are alive and prevented from coming in contact with the Lord and His power and glory. The question is can saints come in contact with them? I also consider differing degrees of darkness in Hell.

Note: God did not destroy the fallen angels. Some are even able to enter into our realm. So what I am suggesting is the possibility of the reverse. Rather than evil entering into good, good enters into the realm of evil. In so doing heaping burning coals upon them. God is present in our realm all the time with all its evil and is still able to be Holy.

Revelation 22:14-15
Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city. 15) Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers and the immoral persons and the murderers and the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices lying.

Image not having your sins covered by the blood of Jesus and being only left with the memories of your rebellion burning within you eternally.

You would be left alone with no one to have sex with, no one to get drunk with, no one to take drugs with, no one to impress and no one that likes you. In Hell!

The Lake of Fire has no exits!

Hebrews 9:27
And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment...

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1 Peter 1:13
Therefore, gird your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation
of Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 11:1
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
